Crack and the Box

The one question everyone asks is "Why?"
Why is the root to every ones concern to everything. Can we really base the truth off of why or does why only give an opinion answer. Why people choose to do drugs is a personal question that not one person can make assumptions towards everyone on. Dope is a drug that in most minds makes them disappear from there anger and sorrow and put them in a state of mind were nothing matters but there happiness. Narcotics and drugs are always going to be apart of our lives. History has shown a huge development of drugs and pushed it to were it is today. Now to compare drugs to TV watching is obscured. There is no link between the two. We not only see drugs on TV but we are also exposed to it in school and work. It is our parents or legal guardians responsibly to control this exposure and educate us on not just the right and wrong but on what to do.
In response to addiction, anything can be addicting. The background behind addiction is being aware of your addiction and learning what to do to help top or minimize the addiction. The reason people participate in certain activities is to escape from the world outside of the box. We want to feel at ease and stress free from whatever we feel is holding us down. Everyone knows that life is not easy nor fair and sometimes this causes people to give up turning to other options of happiness that most turn there nose up to.
Did anyone consider how these individuals could possibly feel? Do you completely understand their story for sitting and staring into the metal square in the wall? Did you even consider there childhood or habits that they may have been raised with?

As They Say, Drugs Kill

This by far was my favorite article that we have read. The hook line completely shocked me and grabbed me encouraging me to read more. All college students can say they have been to a party were something wrong has happened. It does not have to be to this extrema but we all have been through a situation were we needed to think on our feet. Laura Rowely, creatively constructed an outline for this forcing the reading to read on with the shocking story that outlined the theme.
As one student said during our class discussion...
"You never know what your going to do in a situation until you are experiencing it in the heat of the moment!"
This statement couldn't be more true. If a circumstances happens at the drop of the dime there is no time to think critically. You have to think on your toes. Decisions are meant to be made sometimes without thoroughly thinking through them. This adds to the spontaneity of an individuals character and allows your personality to be read in a different light.
Most of the decisions that we make are influenced by previous decisions that we have made on similar situations. Our past experiences to stick with us no matter how hard we try not to let them affect our decisions.
Now in reference to the drug topic, no one is forced to smoke or drink or pop pills. These are all once again personal choices. You have to educate yourself first before you decide to put things into your body. Anything that can alter you normal state of mind can easily turn into a bad experience. The blame game now has come to a stop and you have to stand up to your own self. Like the author said...
"...lessons are supposed to be learned, so that old mistakes are not repeated."

Three Days to See

Such a tragic story for Helen Keller. I can not even imagine how life would be lived without being able to see or hear. I love and rely so much on my 5 senses. I would be were I am today. Would I give up on life? I love to hear my niece and nephews voice on the other end of the phone and my Popi's sweet smell when I walk into his house. The feeling of my fathers hand wrapped around mine or the look of my mothers face when I broke her favorite vase. By far loosing the ability to taste would sadden me. I love food and I love how food can change a persons mood within seconds of it hitting your taste buds. The "for your journal" question still has me contemplating on my answer. I am such a indecisive person were decision makes for me is very difficult.
The author grabs my attention with this entry by asking personal questions throughout the entire work. It really hits the heart when you have to think of loosing something so personal that you use daily just to understand how life can be lived without the option. Being more appreciative of what you have sometimes is lost within living life and just passing through life.
If i were Helen Keller I would love for the opportunity to regain my senses that I lost. That would be something that I know I would dream about. The sound of a bird singing or the look of the stars at night are a couple of things that i would miss. Her survival techniques that she gained over the years are immaculate and inspire me to be more humble to what I have access to. All of the experiences that she goes into detail about that she has never experienced makes me question my values. Really, what matters in life? Do I wake up each morning thanking God for another day that I am living in better health that the day before?

The Power of Audience

The first reading that we were administered to read was not one that caught my eye or mind. The author, Steven Levy, jumped around throughout the entire writing trying to link the paragraphs together with personal projects. Even though his work was not mentally capturing his point did come across towards the end.
It is very true that more and more students come to class with no desire to please their teachers and no vision of the role school might play on their path to success. The whole thought of school can even turn students away. The pressure from family and friends and peers also come into play. Besides outside influences students are pressured in the classroom. Most students are more concerned with their social lives instead of the art class they have to pass in order to graduate. Keeping in mind this, all students learn effectively by different methods and paces. Some students are more of visual learners while others are better at hands on activities. It is hard to comply with each and every student and nor can a teacher leave one student behind to focus on the rest of the class. Students do become less interested in a class when they feel the teacher is not enthusiastic on the topic they are teaching the class.
The one thing that I believe will enhance students creativity and drive to succeed is the Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound. All a students really wants is to have fun while learning. This nonprofit organization helps to improve student achievement and character which should always be the main focus in schools. A good base to build upon provides for a positive attitude. A positive attitude is always willing to learn.

Don't Blame the Eater

There is no doubt that Fast Food Companies, like Burger King and McDonald's, target there customer group towards children. They have built and built over the years ways to thrive off of our fast moving economy. Not one individual can blame a company for there failure to say "NO" when it comes to ordering off of their appetizing menu. Descriptive copy is meant to tantalize the mind in order for sales to be made. If food was made to look unappetizing of sound unflavored, honestly who would eat it. People need to take there own lives into there own hands. You can't always blame other people for the choices that you make and that is exactly what this is all about, choices. We all want freedom but when it is given to us we take it and run a mile with it. When we see our weight slowly climbing we try to blame companies for the food that they provide for us to eat. Not one food establishment forces food down our throats. I have never walked into an establishment were they are holding me down to eat a big fat greasy burger. Every decision that we make bottles down to the word "choice". With choices comes consequences and repercussions.
David Zinczenko, the editor-in-chief of Men's Health, scripts a well formated short synopsis on healthy eating and how this circle of the blame game is administered. He kept me into his journal by stating purely bias statements on eating habits of individuals and company precautions. I disagree with his point that companies do not provide warning labels because indeed they do. Subway is a prime example for this growing standard that is increasing the knowledge of calories and carbohydrates in food. Industries are being forced to apply labels to their sale items or else there profitable items will soon turn into expense items on their revenue accounts.
